Game description:

NFL Blitz 2000 is Midway’s arcade-style American football game, brought to the Nintendo 64 in 1999 as the third entry in the NFL Blitz series. Instead of simulating real NFL rules, it strips football down to 7-on-7 chaos: no penalties, no injuries, and no fouls for late hits, so roughing the quarterback and body-slamming a receiver after the whistle are all fair game. This entry updates rosters for the 1999-2000 season and adds a season mode and a functional playbook editor on top of the series’ trademark over-the-top hits.

How to play

Move your player with the Control Stick. On offense, A passes the ball or switches the active receiver, the C-buttons target a specific receiver directly, B jumps or hurdles a tackler, and Z triggers a Turbo burst of speed. On defense, A switches to the nearest defender, B dives to tackle or swat the ball out of the air, and Z is Turbo run for a harder hit. In the browser, these typically map to the arrow keys for the Control Stick, plus Z, X, C, and Shift for the face buttons. As in every Blitz game, only seven players line up per side, it’s 30 yards to a first down, and the clock keeps running through most stoppages.

Tips

  • Use the C-buttons to throw straight to your chosen receiver instead of relying on the default target — it’s faster and harder for the defense to predict than cycling through with A.
  • Save Turbo for the moment you need it: a well-timed burst breaks arm tackles on offense and closes the gap for a big hit on defense.
  • Convert a fourth down or rack up two sacks and your team catches fire, giving a temporary boost that stacks well with Turbo for a knockout play.
