Released for the Nintendo 64 in 1999, The New Tetris takes the classic puzzle formula and introduces a major new mechanic: fusing tetrominoes into massive 4×4 squares. The game is historically significant for being the first official entry in the series to feature the now-standard “ghost piece” shadow and the ability to hold a block in reserve, while also delivering an excellent four-player competitive mode.
How to Play
While the goal remains clearing horizontal lines by arranging falling pieces, the core strategy revolves around building 4×4 blocks. Arranging four identical pieces into a square creates a gold “monosquare,” while four mixed pieces form a silver “multisquare.” Clearing lines that contain these blocks awards massive bonus points and sends extra garbage lines to opponents. In your browser, use the Arrow keys to move and drop pieces, Z or X to rotate them, and Right Shift to swap with your hold piece.
Tips
- Prioritise building 4×4 squares over traditional four-line clears; the score payout and garbage sent from gold and silver blocks are much higher.
- The ghost piece shadow shows exactly where your block will land, allowing you to confidently hard-drop pieces even at high speeds.
- Keep a straight “I” piece in your hold slot to instantly clear a line and trigger a square when the stack gets dangerously high.
