Game description:

Nazo no Murasamejou (also known as The Mysterious Murasame Castle) is a fast-paced top-down action game developed by Nintendo and released in 1986 for the Famicom Disk System (playable here on the NES). You play as Takamaru, a samurai apprentice tasked with infiltrating four castles to defeat alien entities that have taken control of feudal lords, before finally storming Murasame Castle itself. Unlike its sister title The Legend of Zelda, this game focuses heavily on reflex-based combat, dodging projectiles, and slashing through waves of ninjas and monsters.

How to Play

Your objective is to navigate through the outdoor and indoor sections of each castle domain, defeating enemies and surviving long enough to conquer the castle lord. The controls use the standard NES layout, mapped for your browser:

  • Move: Arrow keys
  • Attack (Sword/Shurikens): Z / X (A/B buttons)
  • Start/Pause: Enter
  • Select: Shift

Takamaru throws shurikens from a distance, but will automatically use his katana when an enemy is in melee range. Your sword is not just for attacking; you can also use it to deflect certain incoming enemy projectiles if timed correctly.

Tips

  • Keep moving: Enemies respawn endlessly and their projectile speeds are incredibly fast. Focus on dodging and progressing forward rather than trying to clear the screen.
  • Grab power-ups: Look out for the lightning bolt icons to grant Takamaru multi-directional attacks, or fireballs which deal more damage. These are essential for surviving the later, more difficult castles.
  • Deflect carefully: Your katana can block standard shurikens and fireballs, but it cannot block explosive bombs or magical attacks, so be ready to step out of the way.
