Oishii Cake-ya-san is the first entry in M.T.O.’s five-game Nakayoshi Cooking series, released in Japan for the Game Boy Color in December 2000. It’s a gentle cooking simulation starring a girl named Komugi-chan, who visits the cake shop auntie in her village to pick up a new dessert recipe, then heads out to gather the ingredients before baking it herself.
How to Play
Each recipe plays out in stages: collect the listed ingredients around the village, measure them out with a virtual measuring spoon, then work through a short cooking minigame — timing a button press to stop a rising gauge when cracking an egg, and turning the D-pad in a full circle to mix the batter — before finishing the bake in the oven. Clear a recipe once and it unlocks a practice mode so you can run through it again. A nice touch: the recipes the game teaches, including chocolate chip cookies, hotcakes, shortcake, and apple pie, are written with real quantities and steps, closely mirroring how you’d actually make them in a kitchen.
Controls (Game Boy Color, mapped for browser play): Arrow keys to move Komugi-chan around the village and to work the D-pad-based mixing action, Z for the A button, X for the B button, Enter for Start, and Shift for Select.
Tips
- Watch the gauge, not the clock — the egg-cracking minigame rewards a precise stop, not a fast one.
- Complete the full circle when mixing; a partial turn leaves the batter unmixed.
- Because the in-game recipes use real measurements and steps, they double as an actual dessert recipe once you’ve played through them.
