Developed by Sunsoft in 1992, Mr. Gimmick is an NES platformer renowned for its vibrant graphics, exceptional soundtrack, and an advanced physics engine that pushed the limits of the 8-bit console. You play as Yumetaro, a small green plush toy who must navigate a challenging fantasy world to rescue his young owner.
How to Play
Your primary tool for combat and platforming is the star. Hold X (B button) to charge a star, and release to throw it. The star bounces with realistic physics, defeating enemies it strikes. Use the Arrow keys (D-pad) to move, Z (A button) to jump, and Enter (Start) to pause.
Tips
- You can jump onto your own thrown star to use it as a moving platform. The star inherits your momentum, so running before throwing changes its trajectory.
- To unlock the game’s true final stage and ending, you must find a hidden magic item in every single level.
- Achieving the true ending also requires reaching the final boss without using a single continue, making early practice with the star’s physics essential.
