Might and Magic: Book I is a party-based, first-person RPG developed by New World Computing and one of the foundational titles of the genre. The NES version brings the full scope of the 1986 original to a console: assemble a party of up to six characters — choosing from classes such as Knight, Paladin, Archer, Cleric, Sorcerer, and Robber — then set out across the open world of VARN. The goal is to uncover the Secret of the Inner Sanctum, a journey that spans vast wilderness regions, several towns, and labyrinthine dungeons packed with monsters and traps.
How to play
Movement is first-person: ↑ steps forward, ↓ steps back, ← and → turn left and right. X (NES A button) confirms actions and menu choices; Z (B button) cancels. Press Enter (Start) to open the main menu for character management, resting, and saving; Shift (Select) cycles display modes. Battles are turn-based — each character acts once per round, letting you choose attacks, spells, items, or retreat for every member of the party.
Tips
- Keep a map. VARN is enormous and the game provides no in-game map — tracking your grid coordinates on paper prevents a great deal of backtracking.
- Rest in towns. Sleeping in the wilderness risks random ambushes; resting at an inn restores the party safely and cheaply.
- Balance your party. A Knight or Paladin up front to absorb hits, a Cleric for sustained healing, and at least one Sorcerer for area-damage spells make the deeper dungeons far more manageable.
