Game description:

Mickey’s Safari in Letterland is a 1993 educational platformer for the NES, developed by Beam Software and published by Hi Tech Expressions. Rather than fighting enemies, Mickey Mouse travels through a string of themed lands — the Yukon, the Caribbean, a jungle, a pyramid, a forest, and a swamp — hunting for lettered gems with his butterfly net. Collecting the gems in each stage spells out a word, and depositing the stage’s stone tablet into Goofy’s machine reveals a letter to match on an alphabet chart, complete with digitized voice clips of Mickey sounding it out. It’s built for very young players: Mickey can’t actually die, and bumping into an enemy or hazard just makes him stumble and lose a little time rather than costing a life.

How to Play

Guide Mickey through each side-scrolling stage, jumping across platforms and catching every lettered gem with his net before reaching the stone tablet at the end. There are no bottomless pits or lethal hazards to worry about, so the platforming itself stays gentle even as more stages get added at the harder difficulty settings.

  • Arrow keys — walk and climb
  • Z — jump
  • X — swing the net to catch a gem
  • Enter — start / pause

Tips

  • Since Mickey can’t be killed, don’t waste time dodging enemies — just push forward and let a stumble cost you a second instead of backtracking.
  • Pick the Normal difficulty first if you want the shorter two-stage worlds; Advanced and Super Advanced add extra stages per world to spell out the full alphabet.
  • Listen for the voice clip after each tablet — it confirms which letter you just found, which is handy if a couple of the pixel-art gems look similar.
