Game description:

Michael Andretti’s IndyCar Challenge is a Formula One-style open-wheel racing game released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1994, developed by Genki and published in Japan by Bullet-Proof Software. Endorsed by the champion driver, it stands out from arcade racers by leaning into simulation aspects, requiring you to tune your car’s downforce, gear ratios, and tire pressure to suit different tracks. The game features fast-paced Mode 7 graphics and covers both oval speedways and technical road courses.

How to Play

Your goal is to win the championship series by placing high in individual races against competitive AI drivers. On the default browser-based SNES controls, use the Arrow Keys to steer your vehicle. Press Z (B button) to accelerate and X (Y button) to brake. You can pause the action with the Enter key (Start).

Tips

  • Adjust Your Setup: Before a race, lower your downforce for higher top speeds on oval tracks, and raise it to gain cornering grip on complex road courses.
  • Drafting: Tucking in directly behind an opponent’s car reduces air resistance, giving you a noticeable speed boost to execute a slingshot pass on long straightaways.
  • Pit Strategy: Keep an eye on your tire wear and fuel gauge during longer races. Pitting at the right time is crucial, as blown tires will drastically ruin your lap times.
