Metal Max Returns is an open-world, post-apocalyptic RPG released for the Super Famicom in 1995 by Data East and Crea-Tech. As a remake of the original Famicom title, it lets you step into the shoes of a hunter tracking down bounties across a wasteland. Unlike traditional JRPGs of its era, it is heavily non-linear, allowing you to explore freely, hunt wanted monsters, and scavenge for parts. The game is particularly famous for its vehicle combat, where you can acquire and heavily customize various tanks to survive the harsh environment. This version features the complete English fan translation by Aeon Genesis.
How to play
Your main objective is to build up your party and upgrade your vehicles by taking down dangerous bounties listed in towns. On a standard keyboard, use the Arrow Keys to navigate the world, Z to interact or confirm commands, X to cancel or open the main menu, and Enter for Start. Combat features both on-foot and vehicular battles; make sure your characters are mounted in their tanks when facing powerful enemies, as tank armor absorbs damage until its tiles are depleted.
Tips
- Maintain your armor: Armor tiles are essential for your tanks. Whenever you visit a town, replenish your armor tiles, as taking damage without them will permanently break your tank’s components.
- Hunt for bounties: Visit the Hunter’s Guild in each new town to check the wanted posters. Bounties are your primary source of income for buying better weapons and chassis upgrades.
- Search everywhere: Use your metal detector often while exploring the overworld to uncover buried items and even hidden tanks.
