Meikyuu Jima is a clever action-puzzle game developed by Irem and released for the NES in 1990. Known outside of Japan as Kickle Cubicle, the game drops you into a series of single-screen frozen mazes where you must collect dream bags to clear each stage. Its combination of reflex-based action and thoughtful puzzle-solving makes it a standout title in the NES library.
How to Play
Your objective in each stage is to collect all the dream bags while avoiding enemies and hazards. The core mechanic relies on freezing enemies using your freezing breath, then kicking the resulting ice blocks. These sliding blocks can defeat other enemies or plug gaps in the water, allowing you to cross and reach new areas. Since this is an NES game, the controls map simply to your browser: use the Arrow keys to move, press Z to use your breath or kick blocks, and use Enter to start the game.
Tips
- Create bridges carefully: Kicked ice blocks will slide until they hit a wall, an enemy, or drop into water. Make sure you align your shots properly so the blocks form bridges exactly where you need them.
- Use pillars as stoppers: You can create temporary ice pillars directly on the ground in front of you. These can stop sliding blocks in their tracks, which is essential for solving more complex puzzles.
- Watch enemy spawns: Enemies will continually respawn from specific points, ensuring you always have a supply of blocks. However, don’t stand too close to these spawners or you may get caught off guard when a new enemy appears.
