Game description:

Megamania is a fixed-screen shooter developed by Steve Cartwright and published by Activision for the Atari 2600 in 1982. Rather than the usual alien armadas, its enemies are everyday objects — hamburgers, dice, bow ties, cookies, and more — arranged in formation waves that grow faster and more demanding as you work through all 12 rounds.

How to Play

Your ship sits at the bottom of the screen. Shoot down every enemy in a wave to advance. Each wave introduces a different object type with its own movement pattern and speed. You have a limited number of lives — lose them all and the game ends. The same formations that feel manageable early on become genuinely punishing by the later rounds.

Tips

  • Each wave\s formation is fixed and repeatable. Study the pattern on one life and position yourself for the next rather than reacting in the moment.
  • Use the brief pause between waves to centre your ship, so you have equal room to manoeuvre when the next formation appears.
  • Activision\s original patch promotion awarded a physical Megamania patch to players who reached 500,000 points and mailed in a photo of their screen — that score remains a meaningful long-term target.
