Mario Bros. is the classic 1983 arcade platformer where Mario and Luigi must clear pests from the New York sewer system, playable here in its DOS port. Developed by Nintendo, it introduced the core mechanics of bumping enemies from below to flip them before kicking them away, establishing the foundation for the entire franchise.
How to play
The objective is to clear every enemy in each phase to advance. Instead of jumping on enemies (which is lethal here), you must strike the floor directly beneath an enemy to flip it onto its back, then touch it to kick it off screen. On DOS, default controls typically use the arrow keys to move and Space to jump. Hitting the central “POW” block flips all grounded enemies at once, but it has limited uses.
Tips
- If you leave a flipped enemy alone for too long, it will right itself and become faster and more aggressive.
- Fireballs will spawn if you take too long to clear a phase, so try to work quickly.
- In two-player mode, you can either cooperate to clear the stage or bump your partner into enemies to play competitively.
