Mahjong 64 is a traditional Japanese riichi mahjong simulation developed by Koei’s Chat Noir studio and released for the Nintendo 64 in 1997. Rather than standard tournament play, the game introduces a unique “Mahjong University” setting where you take on the role of a student aiming to graduate from a four-year course by successfully completing matches. Players can progress through the story-driven Curriculum mode or test their skills in standard Competition and Free play.
How to Play
The objective is to build a winning hand of 14 tiles faster than your three AI opponents using standard riichi mahjong rules. In the browser, the standard Nintendo 64 controls are mapped to your keyboard. Use the arrow keys to navigate your tiles and menu options, press X (A button) to select or discard a tile, and use Z (B button) to cancel. The Enter key functions as the Start button to pause the match.
Tips for Success
- Watch Discards: When playing in Curriculum mode, pay close attention to your opponents’ discards to avoid dealing into their hands. Defending your points is just as critical as winning hands to successfully graduate.
- Practice First: If you are new to the university format, spend some time in Free mode to familiarize yourself with the interface and reading the tile sets before tackling the main four-year campaign.
