Magic Boy is a colourful but challenging 1996 platformer for the SNES developed by Blue Turtle. You play as Hewlett, an apprentice wizard who accidentally turned his master into a giant blue elephant and transformed the local wildlife into monsters. To fix his mistake, you must travel across four distinct worlds, capturing the errant creatures using your magic wand and dropping them into your bag.
How to play
Your objective in each of the 64 levels is to capture a set number of monsters to open the exit. Use the Arrow Keys (D-pad) to move and navigate the tricky terrain. Press Z or X (SNES A/B) to jump and swing your magic wand. When you strike a monster, it is temporarily stunnedโwalk over it to drop it into your bag. You can then throw captured monsters back out to defeat other enemies or clear obstacles.
Tips
- Watch your bag capacity: Hewlett can only hold a certain number of monsters at a time. Be sure to throw them out before trying to capture more.
- Use monsters as projectiles: Thrown monsters travel in a straight line and are excellent for taking out hazards safely from a distance.
- Explore for hidden levels: The game features 32 hidden bonus stages. Jumping into seemingly empty spaces or investigating dead ends often reveals a warp to extra lives and continues.
