Lode Runner is a classic puzzle-platformer released for DOS in 1983. Instead of the typical jumping mechanics of the genre, the game focuses on strategy and quick thinking as you navigate intricate, multi-tiered levels to gather treasure while evading relentless guards.
How to play
Your objective is to collect all the gold chests in a stage to reveal the ladder to the next level. Since you cannot jump, you must outmaneuver the guards by climbing ladders, crossing hand-over-hand bars, and using your laser drill to blast temporary holes in the brick floors. These holes can be used to trap pursuing guards or to drop down to lower areas. Use the arrow keys to move, and your action keys (often Z and X) to dig left and right.
Tips
When a guard falls into a hole you have dug, you can safely run across their head to bridge a gap. If a guard happens to be carrying a piece of gold when they fall in, they will drop it for you to collect. Be careful not to stick around too long, as the brick floor will eventually repair itself, and any guard caught in it will climb out or respawn.
