Kung-Fu Master (also known as Spartan X) is a seminal 1984 beat ’em up developed by Irem and ported to the Atari 7800. Players guide martial artist Thomas through five floors of the Devil’s Temple to rescue his girlfriend Sylvia from the mysterious Mr. X. As one of the earliest side-scrolling fighting games, it established the genre’s foundation, sending waves of varied enemies from both sides of the screen.
How to play
The objective is to clear all five floors of the temple by fighting through regular henchmen and defeating the boss at the end of each level before the timer runs out.

Tips
- Use low attacks to safely dispatch the fast-moving Tom Toms and Grippers that try to grab your legs.
- Kicking gives you a longer reach than punching, making it safer for crowd control, but punches reward you with twice as many points.
- If enemies manage to grab you, wiggle left and right rapidly to break their hold before they drain your health.
