Kujaku Ou (released in the West as SpellCaster) is a supernatural action-adventure game released for the Sega Master System in 1988. Based on the manga of the same name, the game follows a young monk named Kujaku as he investigates mysterious attacks and battles demonic forces. The gameplay creatively alternates between menu-driven adventure segments for exploration and side-scrolling action platforming where you use a variety of magical spells to defeat enemies.
How to Play
Use the D-pad to navigate menus and move Kujaku. In action sequences, press Button 1 (mapped to Z) to attack with magic and Button 2 (mapped to X) to jump. You can charge your magic attack to unleash more powerful spells by holding down the attack button. During adventure segments, use the command menu to look, talk, use items, and move between locations to progress the story. Note that as the original Japanese release, the in-game text is in Japanese.
Tips
- Charging your energy meter allows you to use different elemental spells, but powerful magic consumes more energy, so use it strategically during tough encounters.
- If you get stuck in the adventure segments, try examining every object and talking to all characters multiple times, as this is often required to trigger the next event.
