Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards is a classic 2.5D platformer developed by HAL Laboratory and released for the Nintendo 64 in 2000. As the first 3D installment in the series, it follows Kirby on a colorful adventure across multiple planets to help Ribbon, a fairy from Ripple Star, recover the scattered pieces of her world’s sacred crystal from the dark forces of Dark Matter.
How to Play
Your objective is to guide Kirby to the end of each stage while battling enemies, avoiding hazards, and collecting Crystal Shards. Kirby can walk, run, float, and slide, but his main ability is inhaling enemies. Swallow enemies with powers to gain their Copy Abilities. With typical emulator controls, use the directional keys or stick to move, the A button equivalent to jump and hover, and the B button equivalent to inhale enemies or exhale them as projectiles.
Tips
- Combine Abilities: The defining feature of this game is Power Combos. You can inhale two different ability-yielding enemies at once, or throw one copy star at another, to create completely new and powerful hybrid abilities.
- Hunt for Shards: Finding all 72 Crystal Shards is required to unlock the true final boss and the best ending. Many shards require specific Power Combos to break environmental obstacles, so experiment with different combinations!
