King’s Quest V: Absence Makes the Heart Go Yonder! is a 1990 adventure game by Sierra On-Line, ported to the NES. King Graham returns home to find Castle Daventry stolen away by the evil wizard Mordack. To rescue his kidnapped family, Graham must travel through diverse lands โ a busy town, desert wastes, snowy mountains, and open seas โ collecting items and solving puzzles at every step.
How to Play
Move Graham with the arrow keys. Press X (NES A button) to interact with or examine objects, and Z (B button) to open your inventory and use items. Enter starts/confirms; Shift acts as Select. Inventory puzzles drive the whole game โ pick up everything you can carry and experiment with what you have.
Tips
- Save constantly. Like all classic Sierra adventures, King’s Quest V can reach dead-end states with no warning โ some actions leave the game unwinnable. Save before every significant choice.
- Collect every item in every scene. Nothing is placed without purpose; something that looks irrelevant early on is often the key to a puzzle much later.
- Revisit earlier areas after picking up new items. Many locations have objects or characters that only react once you are carrying the right thing.
