Game description:

Developed by New World Computing in 1990, King’s Bounty is the foundational DOS strategy game that laid the groundwork for the Heroes of Might and Magic series. You play as a hero tasked by King Maximus to recover the stolen Scepter of Order before time runs out. The gameplay splits between exploring a sprawling overworld—recruiting fantasy armies, gathering gold, and hunting down villains to reveal pieces of a puzzle map—and turn-based tactical combat on a grid. Your hero’s leadership capacity dictates how many troops you can command, making careful army management the core loop.

How to play

Your objective is to locate the Scepter of Order by defeating villains to find map fragments across the four continents. In the overworld, time passes as you move, and running out of time results in a game over. In combat, you direct stacks of creatures to attack enemy forces while your hero can support them by casting spells.

The game relies on standard DOS keyboard controls. Use the Arrow keys to move your hero on the overworld map and navigate menus. In combat, use the arrow keys to select units and targets, and press Enter to confirm actions. For fullscreen, press Right Alt + Enter.

Tips

  • Manage your leadership: You can only control a certain number of troops in a stack based on your Leadership stat. Recruiting more creatures than your leadership allows will cause the stack to go out of control and attack your own forces.
  • Garrison troops in castles: Unlike later games in the genre, you only have one hero. You can garrison reserve troops in castles you’ve captured to keep them safe and retrieve them later.
  • Rent a boat early: Exploring by sea is crucial to find hidden treasures, new continents, and map fragments. Be mindful of the weekly boat rental costs.
