Game description:

King of the Monsters is a 1992 kaiju wrestling and fighting game brought to the Super Nintendo by Takara. Originally an arcade hit by SNK, players choose from a roster of massive monsters to grapple, punch, and blast their way through fully destructible Japanese cities. The game combines traditional wrestling mechanics like grapples, throws, and pins with the sheer scale of giant monsters leveling buildings and hurling military vehicles.

How to play

The objective is to defeat the opposing monster by pinning them for a three-count while surviving military attacks and environmental hazards. In the browser, the SNES controls are mapped to your keyboard: use the arrow keys to move your monster. Press Z (B button) and X (A button) for your primary attacks, A (Y button) to run, and S (X button) for heavy strikes. Press Enter for Start and Shift for Select. Grapples happen automatically when two monsters walk into each other; quickly tap the attack buttons to overpower your opponent and execute a throw. When the enemy’s health is depleted, press the attack button near their fallen body to go for the pin.

Tips

  • Mash to win grapples: Grappling is the core of the combat. As soon as you lock up, rapidly tap the attack buttons to execute a powerful throw instead of being thrown yourself.
  • Use the environment: You can pick up airplanes, ships, and tanks scattered around the city and hurl them at your opponent for safe, ranged damage.
  • Watch the electric barriers: The arenas are bounded by deadly electrical barriers. Throwing an opponent into these causes massive damage and can turn the tide of a close match.
