Keystone Kapers is a 1983 Atari 2600 action game programmed by Garry Kitchen and published by Activision. You play Officer Kelly, a Keystone Kop tasked with chasing down the crook Harry Hooligan through the floors of a busy department store. Each level is a timed foot chase through escalators and hazards, with the difficulty ratcheting up every time you make an arrest.
How to Play
Move Officer Kelly left and right with the arrow keys. Push up to board an escalator or elevator and change floors. Pressing Spacebar triggers a burst of speed — useful when Harry is in reach but pulling away. Your energy meter drains steadily over time and takes extra hits whenever Kelly collides with an obstacle: rolling shopping carts, radio-controlled toy planes, and bouncing beach balls all chip away at it. Catch Harry Hooligan before the meter empties to complete the round.

Tips
- Use the elevator to jump ahead of Harry rather than chasing him floor by floor up the escalators — cutting him off saves energy and time.
- Learn each obstacle’s rhythm early. The shopping carts and toy planes run on fixed patterns, and in later rounds they move fast enough that reacting on the fly is too slow.
- Save the Spacebar speed burst for when Harry is on the same floor and close. Sprinting into a shopping cart wastes the energy you need to finish the catch.
