Juuouki is the 1990 Japanese Famicom (NES) port of Sega’s classic arcade beat ’em up, Altered Beast. Developed and published by Asmik, this version faithfully recreates the side-scrolling action where you play as a resurrected centurion tasked by Zeus to rescue his daughter Athena from the demon god Neff. While graphically scaled down for the 8-bit hardware, it retains the core mechanic of collecting spirit orbs to transform into powerful mythical beasts across each stage.
How to Play
Your objective is to fight through waves of undead and monstrous enemies in each level, hunting down special glowing white wolves. Defeating these wolves releases spirit orbsโcollecting three of them triggers your beast transformation, granting you immense power and unique attacks needed to defeat the stage boss. The default NES controls mapped for the browser are:
- Movement: Arrow Keys
- Punch / Attack: Z
- Kick / Jump: X
- Start: Enter
- Select: Shift
Tips
- Prioritize the White Wolves: The glowing wolves are your most important targets. If you miss them, the level will loop endlessly until you collect enough orbs to transform and face the boss.
- Learn Beast Attacks: Each transformation has a distinct moveset. For example, the Weredragon can fly and shoot lightning, while the Werebear can petrify enemies with its breath. Use these ranged and area attacks to keep bosses at a distance.
- Punch Incoming Projectiles: Many enemy projectiles can be destroyed with a well-timed punch or kick, which is crucial for surviving crowded screens before you transform.
