Originally released in arcades before landing on the NES in 1991, Joe & Mac: Caveman Ninja is a prehistoric action-platformer developed by Data East. You take on the role of the titular green and blue-haired cavemen, venturing through hostile landscapes to rescue kidnapped cave-women from a rival tribe. The game stands out for its colorful art style, massive dinosaur boss encounters, and a varied weapon system that lets you chuck bones, boomerangs, and stone wheels.
How to play
Your goal is to reach the end of each stage, defeat the boss, and rescue the captured women. Along the way, you must manage your health bar, which constantly depletes and must be replenished by eating food dropped by enemies. The controls are:
- Arrow keys: Move, duck, and aim
- X: Jump
- Z: Attack
- Enter: Start
- Shift: Select
Tips
- Your health acts as a stamina meter that slowly drains over time. Keep moving forward and pick up every piece of fruit or meat you see to stay alive.
- Holding down the attack button charges your weapon for a much larger, high-damage projectile. Be careful, thoughโholding it for too long will leave your character briefly exhausted and vulnerable.
- The boomerang is arguably the best weapon drop. It has a wide hitbox and damages enemies on its return path, making it perfect for crowd control.
