In Jet Set Willy, the 1984 action-platformer by Software Projects, miner Willy has struck it rich and bought a sprawling mansion, but his housekeeper Maria won’t let him sleep until he cleans up the place. Ported to DOS, this notoriously difficult sequel to Manic Miner tasks you with navigating dozens of surreal, trap-filled rooms to collect every scattered item.
How to play
Your goal is to collect every flashing item across the mansion’s many screens so you can finally go to bed. The platforming is unforgiving, requiring precise timing to avoid bizarre enemies and hazardous surfaces. Use the arrow keys to move left and right, and the Spacebar to jump. Movement maintains momentum in the air, meaning you must commit to your jump arcs carefully.
Tips
- Watch out for infinite death loops. Because the game spawns you exactly where you entered a room, entering a screen while falling or touching an enemy can trap you. Always pause and observe a new room before committing to a jump across the boundary.
- Learn the jump arc. Willy cannot change direction in mid-air, so ensure your takeoff point is precise before attempting to clear hazards.
- Not all items are safe to grab immediately. Some items are placed as bait over deadly drops or right in an enemy’s patrol path. Plan your route to the item and your escape before moving.
