International Superstar Soccer, released in 1995 by Konami for the SNES, is the first entry in a legendary franchise that set the standard for simulation-style soccer games. Unlike the arcade-focused titles of its era, it introduced a realistic approach with a skewed, almost isometric camera angle, large detailed player sprites, and true tactical depth. Players can choose from dozens of national teams and compete in exhibition matches, a full International Cup, or tackle unique, mid-match challenges in the fan-favorite Scenario mode.

How to play

Your objective is to outscore the opposing team. Control your players using the D-pad (mapped to the arrow keys). On offense, use B (Z) for short passes, Y (A) for shots on goal, A (X) for lobs, and X (S) for through balls. On defense, use B (Z) for standing tackles and X (S) for slide tackles. Switch your active player with the L and R triggers (Q and W) and pause with Start (Enter).

Tips

• Use the through pass (X/S) to split the defense when your forwards are making runs, rather than relying entirely on short passes.
• Be cautious with slide tackles from behind; the referees are strict and will quickly issue red cards.
• Practice in Scenario mode to dramatically improve your ability to handle high-pressure situations, such as scoring late equalizers.
