Game description:

Ice Climber is a 1985 vertical platformer from Nintendo where you take on the role of Popo (and Nana in two-player mode) to scale 32 progressively difficult icy mountains and recover stolen vegetables from a giant condor. This specific release is the Japanese Famicom Disk Writer version for the NES, which retains the original arcade-style challenge where precise jumps and careful mallet swings are essential to break through layers of ice and fend off enemies like the screen-scrolling Polar Bear.

How to Play

The objective is to climb to the top of each mountain by breaking ice blocks and jumping up through the gaps, eventually reaching the bonus stage at the summit to catch the condor. Use standard NES controls: move left and right with the arrow keys, swing your wooden mallet to defeat enemies or break ice above you with Z, and jump with X. Use Enter for Start and Shift for Select.

Tips

  • Master the jump: Your character cannot change direction in mid-air. You must have momentum before jumping to cross wider gaps successfully.
  • Watch out for the Polar Bear: If you linger too long on a single floor, a sunglasses-wearing Polar Bear will appear and force the screen to scroll upward, which can cause you to fall off the bottom and lose a life.
  • Maximize the bonus stage: Once you reach the peak, you have a short window to collect vegetables and grab the condor’s talons. Falling in this section won’t cost you a life, but you will miss out on the score boost.
