Game description:

Developed by Nintendo and released for the NES in 1985, Ice Climber is a classic vertical platformer. Players take control of the parka-wearing Popo (and Nana in two-player mode) as they ascend treacherous icy mountains to recover stolen vegetables from a giant condor.

How to play

Your goal is to reach the top of each of the 32 mountains by breaking through layers of ice with your wooden hammer and jumping up through the gaps. Watch out for roaming Topis, Nitpickers, and Polar Bears that try to knock you off the platforms. The NES controls are mapped to your keyboard: use the arrow keys to move, the Z key to jump, and the X key to swing your hammer.

Tips

  • Timing your jumps is critical, as Popo’s momentum is notoriously difficult to control in the air.
  • When breaking ice blocks, try to clear a wide enough gap to jump through without bumping your head.
  • Don’t linger too long on one screen, or the Polar Bear will force the screen to scroll upward!
