Released in 1991 for the NES, The Hunt for Red October is a side-scrolling submarine shooter based on the blockbuster film. Developed by Beam Software, the game puts you in command of the advanced Soviet submarine as you attempt to defect to the United States. You must carefully navigate deep underwater caverns, engage enemy vessels, and manage your limited resources to survive the dangerous journey.
How to Play
Your objective is to guide the Red October through hostile waters while destroying or avoiding enemy submarines, surface ships, and sea mines. The game uses standard NES controls mapped for the browser: use the Arrow keys to steer your submarine in any direction. Press Z (A button) to fire missiles upward at surface targets, and press X (B button) to launch torpedoes straight ahead at underwater enemies. Press Enter (Start) to pause the game, and use Shift (Select) to activate silent running when available.
Tips
- Conserve ammo: Your torpedoes and missiles are limited. Avoid enemies when possible rather than trying to destroy every target on the screen.
- Master silent running: Use the silent running ability to slip past heavy enemy concentrations undetected, saving both your hull integrity and your ammunition.
- Watch your depth: Scraping the ocean floor or ceiling will damage the submarine. Maintain a steady depth to avoid taking unnecessary collision damage.
