Hottarman no Chitei Tanken (often translated as Hottarman’s Underground Exploration) is a Japan-exclusive action-adventure game released for the Famicom in 1986 by Use Corporation. Expanding on the dirt-digging mechanics of arcade classics, it challenges you to explore large, multi-screen underground caverns instead of single-screen levels. This version includes an English translation patch by Six Feet Under.

How to Play

Your objective in each of the game’s 15 stages is to explore the cavern and collect four hidden keys, which will reveal the exit door to the next level. Use the D-pad (Arrow keys) to move and dig paths through the earth. Press A (Z key) to shoot your flamethrower at enemies. You can pick up various items like dynamite and speed boosters; press Select (Shift key) to cycle through your inventory and press B (X key) to use the selected item.

Tips

• Control the flow: Because you dig your own paths, you can trap enemies or create narrow tunnels to easily hit them with your flamethrower.
• One hit and you’re out: Hottarman dies in a single hit, so always leave yourself an escape route when digging into a new area.
