Released by Apogee Software in 1994, Hocus Pocus is an action-platformer for DOS where you play as an apprentice wizard trying to prove his worth. To join the Council of Wizards, you must navigate side-scrolling fantasy realms, battling demons, dragons, and ghosts with your magic.
How to play
Your main objective in every stage is to collect a specific number of glowing crystals to unlock the exit portal. You explore the labyrinths using the arrow keys to move and jump (Up arrow), and press Ctrl to shoot bolts of magical lightning. Throughout the stages, you can pick up silver potions to restore your health or grab special flasks that temporarily grant rapid fire, super jumps, or a devastating laser attack.
Tips
- Shoot at blank walls if you hit a dead end or see inaccessible items; many walls are illusions that vanish when struck by a spell.
- Don’t rush when you have a super jump potion active, as jumping too high in unfamiliar areas can send you straight into ceiling spikes.
- Since your standard lightning attack has a slow firing rate and you can only have a few bolts on screen at once, time your shots carefully against fast-moving enemies.
