Game description:

Published by Sierra On-Line in 1989, Hero’s Quest: So You Want To Be A Hero is a groundbreaking DOS release that blends classic adventure game puzzle-solving with deep RPG mechanics. Set in the fantasy valley of Spielburg, players choose to be a Fighter, Magic User, or Thief, with each class offering entirely different solutions to the game’s obstacles.

How to play

Your goal is to clear the valley of monsters and earn the title of Hero. As a traditional DOS adventure, you move your character using the arrow keys and interact with the world by typing text commands like “look at tree” or “open door”. Combat happens in real-time, requiring you to dodge and strike using the keyboard. Make sure to frequently save your progress, as the valley is full of dangerous creatures.

Tips

  • Your character’s skills improve through practice. If your climbing or magic skill is low, repeatedly perform those actions to level them up.
  • If you get stuck on a puzzle, remember your class. A Fighter might need to break a door down, while a Thief could pick the lock, and a Magic User could cast a spell.
  • Typing “look” in every new area is essential, as the text descriptions often contain vital clues that are not obvious in the graphics.
