Hello Kitty World is a 1992 action-platformer developed by TOSE for the Famicom, though retro gaming fans will recognize it as a vibrant, full-color port of Nintendo’s Game Boy classic Balloon Kid. Originally exclusive to Japan, this fan-translated edition lets English-speaking players experience a deceptively challenging side-scroller that swaps traditional jumping for balloon-based flight mechanics.
How to Play
Instead of standard platforming, Kitty navigates the air using two balloons. Tap the A button (mapped to X) repeatedly to gain altitude and use the D-pad (arrow keys) to steer around enemies and obstacles. You can choose to release your balloons at any time to drop to the ground and walk, but jumping is limited. If your balloons are popped, press Down repeatedly to pump up new ones.
Tips
- Your balloons have their own hitboxes. Watch out for spikes or enemies coming from above, as losing a balloon significantly hurts your lift.
- Pumping up new balloons leaves you entirely vulnerable. Only drop to the ground to inflate replacements when the screen is clear of fast-moving hazards.
- Sometimes the safest route is on foot. If the air is too crowded, release your balloons to walk under the danger, then pump new ones on the other side.
