Gun-Nac is a fast-paced vertical shoot ’em up developed by Compile and released for the NES in 1991. Pushing the console’s hardware to its limits with incredibly smooth gameplay and massive numbers of on-screen sprites, the game is also famous for its delightfully absurd tone—pitting you against swarms of robotic space rabbits, giant carrots, and flying money bags.

How to Play

Use the D-pad (mapped to arrow keys) to pilot your ship. Press A (Z or X) to shoot your primary weapon and B (X or Z) to unleash a devastating screen-clearing bomb. The game features five different weapon types and multiple bomb types that can be upgraded by collecting matching power-ups. Defeated enemies frequently drop money, which you can spend in the shop between stages to purchase weapon upgrades and ship modifications.

Tips

Focus on upgrading one specific weapon type to its maximum level rather than switching frequently—Weapon 3 (homing boomerangs) is incredibly effective for clearing out waves of smaller enemies. Don’t hesitate to use your bombs if you get cornered, as the game is highly generous with bomb drops and deploying one grants you a brief window of invincibility.
