Originally developed by DMA Design and ported to the Game Boy Color by Tarantula Studios in 1999, Grand Theft Auto successfully scales down the seminal open-world crime action into a portable format. Players take on the role of a freelance criminal working through top-down versions of Liberty City, San Andreas, and Vice City, answering ringing payphones to accept syndicate jobs while stealing cars and trying to survive an ever-escalating police presence.
How to play
Your objective is to amass enough points to unlock the next city by completing missions, hijacking vehicles, and causing general chaos, all while managing your wanted level. In the browser, the standard Game Boy Color controls are mapped to your keyboard: use the Arrow Keys (D-pad) to move your character or steer vehicles, Z (A button) to fire weapons or accelerate, X (B button) to enter/exit vehicles or brake, Enter (Start) to pause, and Shift (Select) to cycle through your available weapons.
Tips
- Follow the yellow arrow that appears on-screen to find your current mission objective, as it is easy to get turned around in the sprawling cities.
- Keep an eye out for hidden Kill Frenzy weapon pickups, which are an excellent way to quickly build your score multiplier without worrying about ammo.
- Memorize the locations of Respray shops; driving a hot car into one will instantly clear your wanted level when the police become overwhelming.
