Gopher is an action game published by U.S. Games for the Atari 2600 in 1982. The game pits a farmer against a persistent gopher raiding the garden — the gopher burrows underground and resurfaces to steal crops, and your job is to intercept it before the harvest is gone. Difficulty climbs steadily, and the two-player mode gives each session more life than a solo run ever does.
How to Play
Player 1 uses the arrow keys to move and Spacebar to fire. A connected gamepad is detected automatically. Player 2 joins on the same keyboard: T/G/F/H to move and A to fire. Press F11 to cycle game variations (SELECT) and F12 to reset. Pause with Alt+P; toggle colour and black-and-white display with F2.
Tips
- Difficulty ramps quickly — the first few attempts are where you learn the timing. Don’t give up after an early loss.
- Two-player mode is the best reason to come back: split the keyboard, one player per side, and the game turns genuinely competitive.
