Game description:

Gomoku Narabe Renju is a classic digital board game developed by Nintendo for the NES in 1983. As one of the earliest titles on the system, it brings the traditional Japanese strategy game of Gomokuโ€”often known as “five in a row”โ€”to the console. You can challenge the CPU across three difficulty levels or play locally against a friend.

How to play

The objective is to be the first player to form an unbroken line of five stones of your color, either horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Black always moves first. Because moving first offers a significant advantage, the “Renju” ruleset applies special restrictions to the first player to keep matches balanced.

Controls: Use the arrow keys to move your cursor around the grid, and press X (the NES A button) to place a stone. Press Enter (Start) to begin or pause the game.

Tips

  • Look for open-ended fours: Your primary goal is to create an “open four”โ€”a line of four stones with empty spaces on both ends. Once you have this setup, your opponent cannot block both sides in a single turn, guaranteeing your win.
  • Force defensive plays: Create “threes” that require immediate blocking from your opponent. By stringing together consecutive threats, you can dictate the flow of the board and maneuver them into a trap.
