Developed by the legendary Bitmap Brothers, Gods is a classic 1991 action-platformer for the SNES that sets itself apart with deliberate pacing and puzzle-solving. You control Hercules on a quest for immortality, navigating ancient cityscapes filled with traps, switches, and remarkably intelligent enemies that react to your movements and steal items.
How to play
Unlike fast-paced arcade games, progress in Gods requires a methodical approach. You must carefully time your jumps, find keys, and solve switch puzzles to open new paths and reveal hidden treasures. Use the arrow keys to move your character. Press Z (A button) and X (B button) for primary actions like jumping and throwing weapons. The A and S keys correspond to the X and Y buttons, while Q and E act as the L and R shoulder buttons. Press Enter for Start and Shift for Select.
Tips
- Watch enemy behavior: Enemies in Gods are surprisingly smart; they can pick up items, retreat when outmatched, or wait in ambush. Don’t rush into new areas.
- Explore for switches: Pulling levers often alters the level layout, opening trapdoors or bringing rewards within reach. Sometimes a switch needs to be hit multiple times or in a specific sequence.
- Manage your gold: You can spend collected gems and gold at the shopkeeper between levels. Prioritize upgrading your primary weapon and buying health potions to survive the later stages.
