Game description:

Getsu Fūma Den is a 1987 action role-playing game developed by Konami for the Famicom (NES), presented here with the popular RPGe English fan translation. Drawing heavily from traditional Japanese mythology, the game casts you as Getsu Fūma, a warrior descending into the underworld to avenge his brothers and defeat the demon lord Ryūkotsuki. It stands out for its ambitious gameplay loop, seamlessly blending top-down overworld navigation, side-scrolling hack-and-slash platforming, and pseudo-3D first-person dungeon crawling.

How to Play

Your objective is to traverse the demonic overworld, defeating enemies to earn money for better gear and locating the three demon swords needed to breach the final lair. In the browser, the NES controls are mapped to your keyboard: use the Arrow Keys to move your character, press Z to jump, and X to attack. Enter acts as the Start button to pause or open the menu, and Shift acts as Select.

Tips

  • Take time to defeat respawning enemies for money in the early side-scrolling stages; buying weapon and armor upgrades at shops is essential for survival.
  • The pseudo-3D dungeons are easy to get lost in and contain aggressive enemies. Proceed methodically and consider sketching a map on paper so you can find the exits.
  • Remember to use the secondary items you purchase—such as explosives or invincibility spinning tops—as they are highly effective against difficult boss encounters.
