Released by Atari Games in 1985, Gauntlet is a defining arcade hack-and-slash dungeon crawler ported to DOS. Up to two players can navigate massive, labyrinthine dungeons. The core gameplay revolves around managing endless swarms of enemies, destroying the monster generators that spawn them, and desperately fighting a constantly depleting health bar that acts as a timer.
How to play
Your objective is to descend through the dungeons, surviving as long as possible by finding the exit to each level. You must find keys to open doors and collect food to replenish your health, which constantly drains over time and when you take damage. Use the keyboard to navigate the mazes, shoot your weapon, or unleash screen-clearing magic.
Tips
- Destroy generators first: Monsters spawn infinitely from generators like bone piles and ghost portals. Always prioritize destroying the generators to stem the tide.
- Don’t shoot the food: Your projectile attacks will destroy food items on the ground. Check your line of fire before shooting into a room to avoid destroying your only source of health.
- Save your magic: Magic potions are rare and can clear an entire room of enemies. Save them for emergencies when you are surrounded or dealing with Death.
