Game Boy Wars Turbo is a turn-based military strategy game for the Game Boy, developed and published by Hudson and released in Japan on June 24, 1997. It’s an enhanced version of the original Game Boy Wars, part of the series whose grid-based, unit-versus-unit combat would later evolve into Nintendo’s Advance Wars. Turbo keeps the same core game but sharpens it: a quicker, smarter CPU that makes battles move faster, plus 50 new maps to play through.
How to Play
Command your forces across a grid map to capture the enemy’s headquarters or wipe out all of their units. Each turn you move and order units – infantry, tanks, artillery, and more – that beat some unit types and lose to others, so matching the right unit against the right target matters more than raw numbers. Capturing cities and other properties on the map brings in funds to build reinforcements, and units dug into favorable terrain defend better than those caught in the open.
Controls: D-pad to move the cursor, A/B to select and cancel, Start/Select for menus – mapped in the browser to the arrow keys, Z/X, and Enter/Shift.
Tips
- Learn the unit match-ups before committing an attack – the wrong unit thrown at the wrong target is a wasted turn.
- Prioritize capturing income properties early; more funds early means more units later.
- Turbo’s AI reacts faster than the original Game Boy Wars, so don’t count on it to leave easy openings – defend captured ground as soon as you take it.
