Gambler Jiko Chuushin Ha 2 is a Japanese Mahjong video game published by Asmik for the Famicom (NES) in December 1990, developed by Game Arts as the sequel to 1988’s Gambler Jiko Chuushin Ha. Like its predecessor, it’s a digital adaptation of Riichi Mahjong based on the manga Gyuwanburaa Jikochuushinha by Masayuki Katayama, entirely in Japanese, and pits players against the manga’s cast of eccentric mahjong hustlers, each with its own AI thinking routine and playstyle.
How to Play
The core objective is unchanged from the original: form a winning 14-tile hand of four sets and a pair before your opponents do. Beyond a straight Free Battle against three AI rivals, the sequel adds two new structures — an Elimination tournament that knocks out losers round by round, and an Octopus Battle mode, where you pick the Octopus or Anti-Octopus faction and fight over territory on a hex-style map, with each mahjong match deciding who controls a region. The game also crosses over with Katayama’s other manga Ootoro Club, adding guest characters Katsuin Yoshida and Banchou Riki to the roster.
Controls (mapped for the browser): use the D-pad (arrow keys) to select tiles and menu options, the A button (Z key) to draw or discard, the B button (X key) to cancel, and Start (Enter) to begin a match or pause.
