Released for the Super Famicom in Japan on May 31, 1996, Fishing Koushien is a sports fishing sim developed by A Wave (with Digital We Are) and published by King Records. It’s based on a TV Osaka program of the same name that recasts Japan’s famous Koshien high school baseball tournament as a fishing competition, with three-person high school teams facing off to see who can land the best catch.
How to Play
Each round hands you an objective from a pair of on-screen presenters — often to reel in the largest specimen of a specific fish — across four distinct events: a black bass “quick hook” morning tournament, an offshore boat-fishing battle at Kenzaki, a head-to-head crucian carp match, and a high-stakes Saipan big game fishing round. You pick your spot on the water, cast your line, and control your reel speed to work the fish in. In your browser, use the arrow keys (↑↓←→) to move your cursor and choose your fishing spot, Z (the A button) to cast and reel, and Enter (START) to confirm menus and begin each round.
Tips
- Vary your reel speed: Reel slowly to keep a fish interested before it strikes, then speed up once it’s hooked to bring it in before time runs out.
- Fish for the objective, not just any bite: Each round’s presenters call out a specific target, like a particular species or the single largest catch, so prioritize casting toward that fish over grabbing whatever bites first.
