Faxanadu (USA) (Rev A) is a 1989 action RPG for the NES, developed by Hudson Soft and published by Nintendo as a spin-off of Falcom’s Xanadu (part of the Dragon Slayer series) â its name is a portmanteau of “Famicom” and “Xanadu”. You play a nameless warrior who returns home to find it devastated by a war between elves and dwarves over the magic-giving World Tree, and must climb through the Tree’s ruined levels to set things right.
How to Play
Faxanadu blends side-scrolling platforming with RPG progression: fight monsters for gold and experience, then spend that gold in town shops on better weapons, armor, and magic before pushing further up the Tree. Controls: Arrow Keys to move and climb ladders, Z to jump, X to attack, Enter for Start (pause / use selected item or spell), and Shift for Select (cycle through items and spells).
Tips
- Talk to every NPC in town â several give hints you’ll need to find your way, and some rooms hide useful items.
- Gear up before pushing on: the areas ahead get noticeably harder, and a better weapon or armor makes the difference.
- Keep some gold in reserve for healing items â dying costs you gold, so don’t spend down to zero before a tough stretch.
