Game description:

Famicom Wars is a 1988 turn-based strategy game developed by Intelligent Systems for the NES. As the foundational first entry in the long-running series that would later become known worldwide as Advance Wars, it established the core mechanics of grid-based tactical combat, distinct unit strengths, and property capturing that define the franchise.

How to Play

The objective is to secure victory by either destroying all enemy units on the map or successfully capturing the enemy headquarters. You take turns moving units across various terrain types, attacking enemy forces, and producing new units using funds generated by captured properties. Play using the standard NES controls: use the D-pad (Arrow keys) to move the cursor, A (Z) to select units or confirm actions, B (X) to cancel or view unit details, and Start (Enter) to open the main menu.

Tips

  • Use the terrain: Positioning your infantry in cities, woods, or mountains provides a crucial defensive bonus compared to leaving them exposed on roads or plains.
  • Prioritize economy: Capture neutral cities and factories as early as possible to increase your income, which is essential for deploying expensive, heavy-hitting units like tanks and bombers.
  • Know your matchups: Always shield your vulnerable indirect-fire units like artillery behind your front lines, and build anti-air units if the enemy deploys copters or fighters.
