Game description:

Famicom Mukashibanashi – Shin Onigashima – Kouhen is the second chapter of Nintendo’s classic 1987 text-based adventure for the Famicom Disk System. Drawing heavily from traditional Japanese folklore, the game follows two protagonists, Donbe and Hikari, as they journey to defeat the evil at Onigashima. As the second disk (Kouhen), this installment continues directly from the first, featuring a menu-driven command system to investigate your surroundings and solve puzzles.

How to Play

Gameplay relies on selecting commands (such as Look, Talk, or Take) to interact with the environment and advance the story. You will frequently need to switch between controlling Donbe and Hikari to overcome specific obstacles.

  • D-pad (Arrow Keys): Move the cursor
  • A Button (X Key): Confirm selection
  • B Button (Z Key): Cancel selection
  • Start (Enter): Start game

Tips

  • Use the right hero: Donbe and Hikari have different capabilities. If a command isn’t working, try switching characters in the menu to see if the other has better luck.
  • Be persistent: Like many vintage adventure games, you may need to inspect the same area or talk to an NPC multiple times to trigger the next story event.
