Game description:

Elite on the NES (1991) is a groundbreaking space trading and combat simulator that brings the classic 1984 BBC Micro experience to the console. Starting at Lave station with a basic Cobra Mk III and 100 credits, you have complete freedom to make your fortune as a peaceful trader, a ruthless bounty hunter, or an illegal smuggler. The game features impressive 3D wireframe graphics for the era and an entire procedurally generated galaxy to explore, where your ultimate goal is to upgrade your ship and achieve the legendary “Elite” combat rating.

How to Play

Your objective is to amass wealth by trading goods between planetary systems, hunting pirates for bounties, and upgrading your ship’s weapons, shields, and equipment. In the browser, use the Arrow keys (D-pad) to steer your ship’s pitch and roll. The Z key (A button) fires your lasers, while the X key (B button) adjusts your speed. Use Enter (Start) and Shift (Select) to navigate through your navigational charts, trading menus, and ship status screens.

Gameplay Tips

  • Manual docking is notoriously difficult. You must align perfectly with the station’s rectangular slot and match its exact rotation. Prioritise buying a Docking Computer as soon as possible to automate this dangerous process.
  • Trading contraband like narcotics and firearms to agricultural planets is highly lucrative, but it will make you a prime target for police Vipers. Ensure your ship is well-armed if you choose to smuggle.
  • In combat, never fly in a straight line. Constantly roll and pitch to dodge incoming fire while keeping the enemy centered in your laser sights.
