Dynamite Batman (Japan) is a side-scrolling action game developed by Sunsoft and released for the Famicom (NES) in 1991. Better known in the West as Batman: Return of the Joker, this title switches up the formula of its predecessor by giving the Caped Crusader a projectile-based wrist cannon, turning it into a challenging run-and-gun experience. The game is legendary among retro enthusiasts for pushing the 8-bit hardware to its absolute limits, featuring enormous character sprites, multi-layered backgrounds, and a phenomenal chiptune soundtrack.
How to Play
Your mission is to guide Batman through several stages of heavily armed thugs and dangerous platforming hazards to finally stop the Joker. The wrist cannon can be upgraded by collecting different weapon icons scattered throughout the levels, offering spread shots and homing attacks. Use the D-pad (Arrow Keys) to move and duck, the A button (Z key) to jump, and the B button (X key) to fire your weapon. Press Start (Enter) to pause the game.
Tips
- Slide to survive: Press Down and the jump button simultaneously to perform a slide maneuver. This is essential for dodging high projectiles and slipping under certain hazards.
- Keep your distance: Since this is a run-and-gun rather than a brawler, try to take out enemies from afar before they can crowd the screen.
- Weapon switching: Grabbing different weapon icons changes your firing style. Experiment with the various shot types to find what works best against each boss.
