Game description:

Dungeon Magic: Sword of the Elements is a real-time, first-person dungeon-crawler RPG developed by Natsume and published by Taito for the NES in 1990. Players step into the boots of a warrior tasked with defeating Darces the Dark Overlord to save the Kingdom of Granville. The game stands out for its early pseudo-3D perspectiveโ€”similar to classics like Dungeon Masterโ€”and a unique, extensive runic magic system that lets you combine elements to create over a hundred different spells while exploring labyrinthine dungeons.

How to Play

Navigate the maze-like towns and dungeons from a first-person view, battling enemies in real-time. Use the D-pad (arrow keys) to move and turn. Press A (Z) to attack or interact, B (X) to cast your readied magic or use items, and Start (Enter) to open the menu to manage your inventory and equip runes. Keep an eye on your health and resources, as the gameโ€™s unique magic system drains your HP rather than traditional MP when casting certain powerful spells.

Tips

  • Watch your HP when casting: Because casting certain spells drains your hit points instead of magic points, relying too heavily on magic can leave you vulnerable to enemy attacks.
  • Experiment with runes: You can apprentice under various wizards to learn new elemental runes. Combine them creatively, as the game offers 125 possible spell combinations.
  • Map your route: The first-person dungeons can be disorienting. Keeping a mental noteโ€”or even a physical mapโ€”of landmarks and turns will help you avoid getting lost in the deeper levels.
