Game description:

Dragon Warrior is the NES role-playing game from Enix Corporation that launched one of gaming’s most enduring franchises. You play a lone hero — a descendant of the legendary warrior Erdrick — tasked with rescuing Princess Gwaelin from the Dragonlord and restoring peace to the kingdom of Alefgard. Released in Japan in 1986 as Dragon Quest, it established the template for turn-based JRPG combat: menus, stats, spells, and a world that rewards patience and preparation over reflexes.

How to play

Use the arrow keys to move across the overworld and through dungeons. Press X (NES A button) to confirm menu choices, talk to NPCs, and open doors; press Z (NES B button) to cancel or close. Press Enter to open the main menu.

Combat is 1-on-1 and fully menu-driven. Each round you choose FIGHT (physical attack), SPELL (magic), RUN (attempt to flee), or ITEM. Your hero learns spells as they level up — HEAL recovers HP, HURT damages enemies, SLEEP puts a foe to sleep for a free round. Stock up on Herbs before leaving town; they are cheap and can save a run.

Tips

  • Speak to the King in Tantegel Castle at the very start to receive free equipment and your first quest briefing — do not skip this.
  • Train against Slimes and Red Slimes near Brecconary until level 4 or 5 before exploring distant areas; the open world will kill an underprepared hero quickly.
  • Once learned, the REPEL spell stops random encounters and is invaluable when backtracking through dungeons you have already cleared.
